Kindly install the updates

If you want your iPhone to work well and be fresh with technology, you need to keep
your iPhone software updated. Usually there are a lot of new software updates coming up
at very short intervals of time to fix any existing bugs and glitches. So you should keep
your iPhone updated all the time.

So how do you update your iPhone? Well, that’s the hidden beauty of iPhone. All you
need to do is connect your phone for charging or syncing and all required updates and
bug fixes are automatically loaded to your system.

A software geek might tell you not to buy version 1.0 of anything. This is usually because
this version will have a lot of bugs that start showing up after people start using it. But in
case of the iPhone, because of the way the updates are loaded onto your iPhone, you
barely need to worry about the bugs. Apple is working on all the bug reports and defects
every to make sure your iPhone is up and running to give you the best experience.

A little bit of history here: Within the first 2 months of the original iPhone’s life, software
updates 1.0.1 and 1.0.2 came down the pike, offering louder volume, security fixes, bug
fixes, and many other subtle improvements. The big-ticket updates, bringing more actual
features, came tumbling after (1.1.1 through 1.1.4). Now that 2.0 is here, you can expect
a similar flurry of fixes to follow.

Flick, rotate, zoom and pan pics

Watching those memorable photos on your iPhone is an amazing experience. Not just
because of the quality of the photos but also because of the cool stylish way you have to
use the iPhone to actually go about watching the photos. Some of the really cool things
you can do with the iPhone are:

Flick: Just run your finger quick over the surface of the iPhone. Do this from left to right
or from right to left. This way you can browse through the photos that you have captured
or stored in your iPhone

Rotate: Just turn your iPhone sideways and watch the picture realign itself. This rotating
property of iPhone works very well even with the camera. Whenever you snap a picture,
the iPhone understands the angle at which you were holding the iPhone and stored the
picture accordingly.

Zoom: You can pinch the picture or you could just double tap it. If you double tap a part
of the picture, that part is aligned to the center and the picture will be zoomed in. You can
control the amount of zooming by pinching in or pinching out picture.

Panning: You could tap your finger and drag it around the iPhone to look at the image.
You will be amazed at the ease at which you can just pan through images.

Listen to Your Voicemail Messages from Other Phone

You can listen to your voicemail message from other phone. This is very much possible in iPhone. You need to dial your phone number and wait till the voicemail application speaks to you. After you are greeted, tap on *, dial and then enter the password for your voicemail and press the # key. The female voice starts playing the first unread message.

After every message you will be given 5 options and they are

1>delete: You will be told that you can delete the voice message by pressing the key 7.
2>save: The voicemail can be saved by tapping on the number 9.
3>replay: if you did not understand the message properly, you can always replay by pressing 4.
4>details: to know the details regarding date, the caller number and time you can press 5.

The last two options won’t be given by the automated voice response unless you press 0.

If you find it hard to use iPhone voicemail features ,you can always use this old fashioned method. By holding down the key 1(speed dial),you get connected to AT&T and you get voice response from a lady which is automated and guides you to listen to your voicemail messages.

Fingers Vs Thumbs

August 20th, 2009

Fingers vs. Thumbs

With iPhone’s uniquely designed touch screen surface, classical cell phone users will
be in a dilemma at times – whether to use thumbs or to use the fingers. There
probably is no direct answer to this. The best answer would be both. Don’t say that
we are being too diplomatic. We have our reasons.

It seems easy to hold the iPhone in your non-dominant hand (that will be the left
hand for right-handed people) and type with the index finger of your dominant hand.
This way is useful for many. An advantage of using the iPhone like this will be that
you will do the pinching with an index finger and your thumb.

Another method could be to cup the iPhone in your hands and use both the thumbs
to type. This has some advantages of its own as it allows you to hold your precious
iPhone in a more secure way. If you are used to hitting keys on a normal cell phone
you would still be in the habit of doing this.

A rather strange, but efficient method of using the iPhone keypad is to set it
horizontally on a surface and type with fingers using both hands. This will of course
require you to carry a sturdy surface everywhere you go defeating the sole purpose
of a hand held device. Sometimes this technique will allow you to type faster but has
the obvious drawbacks.

It is up to you to try and find the most comfortable method among all these.

Sharing YouTube videos using iPhone

You may have used your iPhone to view videos on YouTube so many times. But have
you tried sharing them with some of your friends? If not, it is about time you start
doing it. Here is a small description on how you share YouTube videos using your
iPhone.

Viewing YouTube videos on your iPhone is perhaps one of the easiest things to do.
This is perhaps easier than watching YouTube videos on your desktop PC. To make
things even better Apple has provided a way to share email with a single tap. While
you are watching a video you can see the little mail icon in the controls along with
the play, pause, bookmark and volume control. You just need to tap the icon and
you are on your way to share a video. iPhone fills in the subject field with the name
of the video and the body with the link to the video. So you barely have any tedious
typing to do. All you have to do now is select the names of people to whom you have
to send the email and select send. Its as easy as that. So go share a video with your
buddy now.

iPhone as Camera, IPod and Communicator

iPhone consists of a 2 megapixel high resolution camera which meets all the requirements for taking high quality photos. The photo software which is built into the phone makes digital photo management so easy that anybody from kids to adults can have their own collection of professional grade photos. It is so simple that you cant just stop clicking! The main advantage is that you can make your own photo albums by getting printouts from a digital printer connected to a PC or Mac. iPhone syncs easily with PC or MAC and so iPhotos can be shared between them.

iPhone is also an IPOD! It will be an insult if we say just say IPOD, it is super IPOD! You can listen to your favorite music, read EBooks, watch videos, television programs, and movies. Not only this, you can import all the contents of Apple IPOD and also load multimedia files from your PC or MAC. The most amazing feature which makes this different from IPOD is the beautiful wide high resolution color display screen. You will be astonished by the quality of the videos. This device can do everything that an IPOD does and many things which IPod cannot.

Not only can you use this gadget as a phone, video camera, IPOD but also as an internet communicator. You can send files, receive files, email, and browse internet. A high class web browser called Safari is built into iPhone which makes browsing fun and simple. An amazing feature called Maps comes with iPhone. With this feature you can get satellite imagery and directions for the location you have to visit. Also you can find gas stations, restaurants, hospitals, apple stores and health clubs.

So iPhone is not an ordinary handheld device but a multipurpose gadget.

Tips and tricks with links and numbers

Tips and tricks with links and numbers

iPhone has been designed to provide the best usability features for the user. iPhone its used by its users to do many things like browsing, playing , gaming, and of course to make calls. To make life easier iPhone has a capability to identify phone numbers and URLs in any text. When it sees a combination of number or characters which it thinks is a number or a URL, it will decorate the text with a blue link. All you need to do is click and iPhone will take you the right application that does a phone call or opens up a website.

Apart from this feature of iPhone, Safaris features in handling numbers makes this entire feature a lot interesting to use. Open a webpage in safari that contains a phone number.
Tap on the phone number, it gives you options to call the number or cancel the call. If you select to call, the iPhone calls that number and if you select to cancel the call you come back to the page you were browsing in safari.

With links in safari, there is a slick trick. You can just press and hold the link for a few seconds and a small bubble with the actual URL opens up. This serves multiple purposes. You can recognize bogus links without actually having to open the link in a new safari window. If you want to go to the link you just tap on the link again. This trick can be used even in your mails and texts.

Handling sync issues

August 10th, 2009

Handling sync issues

One problem you might sometimes face with the iPhone is the problem of trying to sync it with the computer. Sometimes you may not be able to see the songs listed properly, or have trouble uploading songs. Usually you receive a message from iTunes that says there are sync issues between your iPhone and iTunes. Here are a few steps that might help you solve this problem:

* Recharge your iPhone: If you havent recharged your iPhone before, you should do it once to make sure everything is in sync. Once your iPhone is recharged, try to syc it with iTunes again.
* Use a different USB port. Sometimes it is your computer that is acting cranky. If you are having sync issues with one USB port, you should try another USB port. With extensive usage, your cables may go bad. So make sure that the cable is alright by testing it with a few different ports on different systems.
* Restart iPhone: The restart trick always seems to work! When nothing works, restarting your iPhone usually does the magic.
* Restart your computer: If you are using a Windows/Mac system, and you are having the same problem with different iPhones/iPods, you should probably restart your system and check if it solves the problem
* Reinstall iTunes: If nothing works you should probably reinstall iTunes.

Message attachments in iPhone

Message attachments in iPhone

Did you know your iPhone has applications to view most attachment types? You can view .c, .cpp, .diff, .doc, .docx, .h, .hpp, .htm, .html, .m, .mm, .patch, .pdf, .txt, .xls, .and xlsx file extensions. That is a good list of all files that you can just read immediately. Its pretty cool that your iPhone can show you all these messages. But you should remember some of the attachments cannot be opened. For example if someone sends you a shockwave file, with a .swf extension, you cannot view that on your iPhone. In this case you will not be able to open the attachment. We hope that plug-ins to view other files types will be introduced, but till then you cannot view unsupported file types in your iPhone.

So there are so many types of attachments that you can view. How do you view them? Heres how:

1. Open the mail message containing the attachment.
2. Tap the attachment that is shown at the bottom of the message.
3. View the attachment.
4. Once youre done reading, tap the Message button in the upper-left corner of the screen to return to the message you started with.

Though iPhone supports all these file types, you should not get very used to viewing the attachments form your mails. You should also use a computer to check your mails sometimes!
