Getting crazy with ringtones
One of the first things people do when they buy a new shiny cell phone is try
different ringtones. iPhone after all is a cell phone too! You should play around with
the ringtones that are available on this. Here is how you access the ringtones that
are built into your iPhone.
1. Go to your home screen by pressing the home button
2. Here tap settings to go to the iPhone settings.
3. In the settings panel tap sounds to get a list of available ringtones
4. Tap a ringtone to access the available ringtones.
5. You can scroll among the available ringtones by flicking your finger up and
down the list.
6. In the list you can select a ringtone to hear the sound of it.
7. The ringtone you just played will be the ringtone that was selected. If you
dont like the current selection make a different selection.
You can also assign specific ringtones to callers by selecting the caller, and then tap
assign ringtone. You will now come back to the same ringtone list you saw a few
minutes ago. Choose the ringtone that you wish to assign to the user.
To add new ringtones you will have to buy new ringtones from the internet and add
them to your iPhone. Currently there is no method to save new ringtones into your
iPhone from iTunes.

Creating playlists on iPhone
There are two grand ways of creating playlists on your iPhone: the iTunes way and
the iPod way. Of course you can create a playlist in iTunes and then just sync it with
your iPhone. But when you are roaming around, you do not have resources to
actually plug in to a computer and create a playlist and then upload it onto your
iPhone. Do you? In suck a situation you would create an “On-the-go” playlist. We’ll
tell you how to do it.
1. First tap the iPod icon. If you don’t know where to locate it yet, it is in the
bottom right corner of the home screen.
2. Here you will find a playlists icon at the bottom of the screen. Tap it and you
will enter the playlist edit mode.
3. In the playlist edit mode, tap the first item – “On the go”.
4. Now you will get an alphabetical listing of all the songs that are available on
your iPod. To the right of each song is a little “+”.
5. Tap the “+” sign to add the song to the “On the go” playlist.
6. Once you have all the songs you want in the playist, tap the “Done” button on
the top right corner.
The good thing about an “On the go” playlist is that it gets saved on your system
when you sync it using iTunes.

Sleep to the sound of music
No, we are not saying that the movie puts you to sleep. We are talking about that
blissful sleep you get when you are listening so some of those oldies. To make this
sleep more blissful Apple has provided a way to turn off the songs once you are
asleep. All you have to do is use the sleep timer. Here is how you do it.
1. In your home screen locate and tap the clock button.
2. Now in the lower right corner find the timer icon and tap it
3. In the timer, set the number of hours and minutes you want the iPhone to
play. Once you have set the time tap the “When Timer Ends” button.
4. Now, specify what has to be done when the timer ends. In our case tap the
“Sleep iPod” button.
5. Tap the set button in the top right corner. You are all done now. All you have
to do is start the timer and sleep.
6. Finally tap the “Start” button. This is not hard to find, it is the big green one
right in the center.
Now your iPhone will play for a while and once the timer ends the iPod will go to
sleep.

Geotagging
Sounds like a fancy word doesn’t it? If you start talking to a geek (iPhone really is very
geek friendly) about a GPS system and a camera, then they might start talking about
geotagging. So its time you understood what geotagging really is.
You might have seen the little time stamp on the photos you take with your iPhone. This
is a rather simple application. The iPhone uses the inbuilt clock to embed the time at
which the photo was snapped into the photo. Now considering the fact that your iPhone
has an inbuilt GPS along with the camera, wouldn’t it be nice if it could store the location
at which the photo was taken along with the time at which the photo?
This is what geotagging does. It embeds an invisible value for the latitude and longitude
at which you were when you snapped a photo into the photo that was taken. Your iPhone
can tag almost every photo you take. With this you will add more value to every single
picture you take from your iPhone. With this you can arrange your pictures by
chronology or by location. iPhone really makes things nice and easy. Next time you take
a photo talk to your geeky friends about the geotag embedded in it.

Visual voicemail
With iPhone you have the special option of actually looking at your voicemails.
Previously you had to call in the voicemail number and enter your password and then
make a bunch of selections and then continue with several other selections after you are
done listening to the voice mail. This entire process is made very user friendly with the
Apple iPhone. You can view the voice messages as if they were text messages by
avoiding all the dialing and the key strokes.
When you get a voice mail it is listed among all the existing voice mails. These voice
mails can be identified by the number you have stored in your contacts list. If a number is
not stored in your contacts list the number is displayed instead of the name.
When you listen to a voicemail, you will have the option of either calling back or deleting
it. This avoids several seconds of listening to the automated voice saying ‘to save this
message press pound, to delete this message press 9′.
You can even scroll through your message using a slider on the screen. If you didn’t
catch what the person who left you a message said, you could just slide back to the point
you want to listen to again.

Using volume preferences on iPhone
There are some settings that will make your time with the iPod in your iPhone a
pleasant experience. Firstly let us start with the basics: the volume settings.
Ever had that problem where the volume of one song is very less compared to the
other? You play a song that has a low volume and a song right after that just blasts
out of the earphones making you shuffle your pockets for that mp3 player? iTunes
has a setting to prevent this from happening. You can tell iTunes to play all songs at
the same volume level. Here’s how you do that:
* Choose iTunes > preferences (Mac) or Edit > Preferences (PC)
* Click the playback tab
* Select the sound check box to enable it.
Once you have the settings set on iTunes, you can tell your iPhone to use the
settings used by iTunes. Here’s how you do that:
* Go to the home screen on your iPhone
* Tap settings
* Tap iPod
* Now tap sound check to turn the feature on.
Once you have these features set, you can listen to your songs comfortably without
changing the volume during playback.

iPhone camera – Shutter lag
Among the several cool things you get with the camera, the animated shutter thing you
get with the iPhone was probably the only thing you wish you didn’t. Of course the
camera application does look a lot more catch with the shutter animation and the nice
little “snap” sound. But as you keep using the camera more, the small time difference
between when you actually tapped the capture button and the time when it actually
snapped the photo start seeming longer.
We were wondering if the animation is causing the lag or if the animation was used to
just keep you entertained during the lag. But finally, this does not matter if all you want
to do is snap a photo. If you want to be all geeky and find out the “technical” reason
behind the shutter lag, then you go do some geeky stuff (you know who you are!).
The good thing about this is that Apple has made it a point to make sure the end result is
a high quality photo. The quality of iPhone’s photos is one among the best in the market.
If you want to find out a way to tackle this problem with the shutter lag, we have a small
truck for you in our article here.

Typing faster with slides
Here are some things that you can do to improve your typing speed with iPhone. Apple knows how its products work and they have made this way of using slides to get your typing faster.
While you are typing, first you should do a half tap. That means you touch your finger to the screen but you don’t lift it up. Now after you have done that, move your finger around till you find the right key you wanted to hit. You can know this very easily, as the key you are about to type is enlarged. Once you know you are on the correct key, lift your finger. The required key is typed.
You may think that this is a time consuming task, but this saves a lot of time if you are prone to hit the wrong keys at times. This is definitely better than having to hit the “backspace” button isn’t it?
When it comes to sliding and half tap you could use the same trick to type punctuation marks very easily. Just half tap and slide over the punctuation list (“.?123″) and wait for the punctuation keyboard to open up. Once this opens up continue the half tap over to the key you want and then release. You type the punctuation mark you need and you are back to the normal alphabetic keyboard. People who start using this get into the habit of doing only this as it makes everything so easy!

Network speed testing on your iPhone
If you think that EDGE is better than Wi-fi or you want to know if 3G is really better, you should check the network speed of your iPhone. Your iPhone has to send data and receive data to make your internet applications work. The rate at which this data is transferred defines the iPhone network speed.
Network speeds are measured by the amount of data transferred per second. The usual measure of this is in Kbps (Kilo bits per second). To test your network connection speed you will need some assistance from www.iphonenetworktest.com. Once you get to this site, all you need to do is just tap on the start test link and wait for a few seconds to give you the results. Easy isn’t it?
You can use this to check speeds of sites with different 3F, Wi-fi and EDGE networks. If you just have a look at this, you will notice the sites that work with Wi-fi or with EDGE. By analyzing the results of this site properly, you should be able to get the settings on your iPhone to work great with different sites.. iPhone provides too many options and you will take time to get to know about everything!

Important notes regarding keyboard usage
When you first get the iPhone, you will be having problems with the keyboard. If you have not meddled a phone which uses software instead of buttons, it may feel very different. But believe me it is most efficient way to control the phone and the best feature to have. Since this is not a physical keyboard few things need to be kept in mind. They are
1>Never use your nail to tap the phone.
2>Use your thumbs to type.
3>Do not press but gently tap the screen.
4>User can use other fingers also and it depends on how comfortable you are with the other fingers.
5>Use complete pad of the finger to tap.
6> You will get a display at the top which shows you which key you have tapped .So do not test after tapping a key every time, just go ahead with your complete text.
7>if you accidently type a wrong word, there is built in dictionary which provides with the correction. Just replace your word with the word shown. It is so simple.
8>There is a spell checker which identifies your mistake and suggests you correction as well.
9>you can get back to a particular word where you have made mistake before with just tap.
Not only this, it has many more features which you will know when you start using the iPhone. It is rightly said “Good things always come in small packages”.
